Who we are

Greek Minority Kindergarden and Primary School in Imvros

Welcome!

We are a Primary school that includes a Kindergarten class that serves the Greek minority community on the island of Imvros (Gökçeada) since 2013. Our facilities are located on the north side of the island, in the small village of Agioi Theodoroi (nowZeytinliköy) with population (including families teachers and students) about 60 people.

As with all minority schools in Turkey, our school curriculum is bilingual, in Turkish and Greek, with a strong emphasis on English as a third language. Consequently, some of our teachers are Turks, while most are either Greeks or Romans (Turks of Greek descent).

Most of our students come from local Imbrian families who returned to Imbros from Greece with the opening of our school. The children of our Greek Teachers are also a significant percentage of our students.

Where we are

Agioi Theodoroi, Imvros

Imvros (Gökçeada) is the largest island in Turkey and is located in the northeastern Aegean. While the population was almost exclusively Greek (Roman) until the 1960s, the demographic situation has changed dramatically since then. Currently the Greek community is a small minority on the island with a population of 9000.

Agioi Theodoroi (Zeytinliköy) is one of the original authentic Greek settlements along with Agridia (Tepeköy), Schinoudi (Dereköy), Glyki (Bademli) , Panagia (Merkez), Eulambio (Yeni Mahalle) and the Castle (Kaleköy), the first capital of the island. Agioi Theodoroi is the village of the Ecumenical Patriarch where you can find the museum that houses traditional objects and souvenirs from his life. The village is also famous for the multitude of traditional cafes that offer a pleasant break to tourists visiting the village.

Agioi Theodoroi today has 80 permanent residents.
